Organic gardening and sustainable gardening are often used interchangeably
and the main difference is that Organic Farmers and growers need to adhere to strict rules concerning the use of synthetic fertilisers, pesticides and GMO products.
So what is sustainable gardening then?
Sustainable farming and garden management include the use of organic products and a lot more concerning land management It relies on natural processes and inputs to maintain soil fertility, control pests, and promote plant health.
How can we garden organically?
1. Healthy spoil: using ideas like the no dig method, use of compost and making your own compost
2. Natural Fertilisers: Instead of chemical fertilisers, organic gardeners use natural sources of nutrients, such as compost, composted manure, bone meal, blood meal, and fish emulsion
3. Pest and Disease Management: Avoiding synthetic pesticides and using natural pest control methods like biological controls, companion planting, and crop rotation.
4. Biodiversity: Encouraging diversity by planting a wide variety of plants and flowers that attract beneficial insects such as bees and other pollinators and attracting animals, birds and insects that consume pests creating a balanced ecosystem that supports plant health and reduces pest problems.
5. Water Conservation:use techniques such as mulching, drip irrigation, and rainwater harvesting to maintain soil moisture and reduce the need for additional watering.
This is about working with nature to grow healthy, productive plants while minimising the environmental impact.
